Cuglieri is a large Montiferru town at almost five hundred metres, dominated by the dome of the basilica of Santa Maria della Neve, visible from afar. Heir to the Roman town of Gurulis Nova, it belonged to the Giudicato of Torres in the Middle Ages. Its territory runs down to the sea, with the beach of Santa Caterina di Pittinuri, the rock arch of S'Archittu and the ruins of Cornus, a Punic-Roman and then early Christian centre. The countryside has over thirty nuraghi, and Montiferru olive oil is among the island's best. On 5 and 6 August horsemen escort the Madonna della Neve to her sanctuary.
