Villasimius is one of Sardinia's best-known resorts, at the island's south-eastern tip, with a territory that includes the Capo Carbonara headland, protected by one of the finest marine reserves in the Mediterranean. In Punic times an important settlement stood here, excavated since 1970 at Is Cuccureddus, with a sanctuary also used in Roman times. Its beaches are famous: Porto Giunco, between the Notteri lagoon with its flamingos and the Spanish tower, Simius, Campulongu, Punta Molentis, Cala Pira and Timi Ama. Off the cape lie the Isola dei Cavoli, with its lighthouse and the statue of the Madonna del Naufrago on the seabed, and the island of Serpentara. In the village, gathered around the parish church of San Raffaele Arcangelo, you can visit the Archaeological Museum, with finds from a shipwreck, and the Fortezza Vecchia by the sea.
