Buggerru is a mining village founded in the 19th century in a gully plunging to the sea, in the heart of the Iglesiente. In 1904 its miners went on strike and were fired upon, sparking the first general strike in Italian history. Today the mines are part of the Geo-mining Park: you can visit the Galleria Henry, a tunnel over a kilometre long cut into the rock with openings above the sea, where the ore train once ran. The harbour now serves pleasure boats, and the territory includes Cala Domestica, one of the west coast's finest beaches. Santa Barbara, patron of miners, is celebrated on 4 December.
