Portoscuso is a fishing town on the south-west coast facing the island of San Pietro. Its name, Portoscusi, the hidden port, already appears on 16th-century charts; the village grew in the 17th century around the Su Pranu tuna fishery, now restored as an event venue. Its symbol is the 16th-century Spanish tower by the sea. Ferries to Carloforte leave from the hamlet of Portovesme. Portoscuso is tied to bluefin tuna: a tuna festival is held in June, while Santa Maria d'Itria is celebrated on 27 May.
