Bortigali is a Marghine village at the foot of Monte Santu Padre, Roman in origin and linked in the Middle Ages to the abbey of San Nicola di Trullas, when it was known for horse breeding. Around the 15th-century late-Gothic parish church of Santa Maria degli Angeli, houses keep carved Aragonese windows and doorways. Its loveliest tradition is the September pilgrimage: at dawn on the 7th the women carry a statue of the Madonna on foot to the chapel of Santa Maria di Sauccu in the Badde Salighes forest, three hours away.
