Arborea

Arborea is a municipality in the Province of Oristano with about 4,048 inhabitants, 7 metres above sea level.

Arborea is a new town, born from the land reclamation of the 1920s and 1930s: where the Sassu marsh once lay, the Società Bonifiche Sarde laid out a grid-plan town and square fields, farmed by settlers mostly from the Veneto and Friuli. Until 1944 it was called Mussolinia.

The centre, with its garden square and Liberty and neo-Gothic buildings, looks more like a northern Italian village than a Sardinian one. Today Arborea is known for dairy farming and milk. Towards the sea lie pinewoods and the long beach of the Gulf of Oristano, and to the south the Marceddì and San Giovanni lagoons.
