Santa Giusta is a village a few kilometres from Oristano on the shores of the lagoon of the same name, standing where the Phoenician-Punic city of Othoca lay, which lived on in Roman times. In the Middle Ages it was the seat of a diocese, and it was part of Oristano until 1947. Its finest monument is the 12th-century Romanesque basilica of Santa Giusta, one of Sardinia's most important, built in sandstone with columns reused from Othoca and Tharros and a crypt beneath the chancel. The lagoon is an important wetland for birds. In August the regatta of the fassonis, the old reed boats of the lagoons, is held, and the feast of Santa Giusta falls between August and September.
