Elmas is the municipality of Cagliari airport, on the edge of the capital by the Santa Gilla lagoon. Its fertile, well-watered land has been settled continuously, as the ruins of the ancient centres of Simbilia and Mogor show; until 1989 it was part of Cagliari. The old centre of Campidano mud-brick houses with courtyards is now surrounded by new residential districts. From the airport the train reaches central Cagliari in minutes, and the Santa Gilla lagoon beside the runways is home to flamingos and other waterbirds.
