Stintino is a fishing village at the far north-western tip of Sardinia, on the peninsula stretching towards Asinara. It was founded in the late 19th century by fishing and shepherd families forced to leave Asinara when the island became a penal colony, and has been an independent municipality since 1988. The village gathers around its two small harbours, and the Tuna Fishery Museum tells the story of the tuna fishing that was its livelihood. Just to the north lies La Pelosa beach, with very white sand and shallow water in front of the tower and Isola Piana, one of the most famous in Italy (with limited entry in summer), and Capo Falcone. Excursions to Asinara National Park leave from Stintino. The Madonna della Difesa is celebrated on 8 September, and a lateen-sail regatta is held in August.
