Calasetta is the Ligurian village of Sant'Antioco island, founded in 1770 by Tabarchino settlers, descendants of Genoese fishermen from Tabarka in Tunisia, along with Piedmontese families. You can still see it in the grid plan of straight streets and low white houses, and hear it in the Tabarchino dialect. In the centre stands the neoclassical parish church of San Maurizio, with the Savoyard tower on the headland and fine beaches such as Sottotorre and Le Saline nearby. Ferries leave for Carloforte, and vines on the sand produce Carignano del Sulcis.
